How things are here

~ Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Greetings to you, our guest.  Pocahontas County did not suffer the severe flooding and loss that many of our neighboring counties and communities suffered. Our hearts and thoughts are with our neighbors as recovery continues.

For our visitors, when traveling to Pocahontas County main highways are open. We recommend for those traveling from the south or east, to travel Rt 39 from Virginia or on Interstate 64 to take Rt 219 north from Lewisburg up in to Pocahontas County, including Marlinton, Snowshoe and Green Bank.  Please check our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pccvb/ for updates, changes and list of areas affected.  Thank you for your patience and thank you for vacationing here!

YOU can help

We understand that visitors have big hearts and want to help. Please consider making a financial contribution through one of these community organizations.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort and Snowshoe Foundation have made a significant contribution to a flood relief fundraiser for the American Red Cross of WV. Folks can also contribute individually.

Closings

Main highways are open throughout the county including Routes 28, 39, 92 and 219 and all roads are passable.   Rt. 66 is now open all the way through from Rt 219 through Cass and to Rt. 92.  Emergency services recommends travelers divert around White Sulphur Springs for the time being. Please call our office at 800.336.7009 if you have questions about optional routes.

Greenbrier River Trail State Park is open from Anthony to Cass. The trail is currently closed from Anthony to Caldwell until repairs are completed.

All other county attractions including Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, Durbin Rocket, National Radio Astronomy Observatory are open and operating on regular schedules.

Williams River Road and campsites along the Williams River were heavily damaged.  The road is impassable and will be closed indefinitely until repairs can be made. The closure extends from the fishing pier just east of the Highland Scenic Highway upstream to the road’s end, and from downstream of the Tea Creek Campground to the county road east of Dyer.

Day Run Campground is open and accessible by CR 17 from Edray. Route 86 off of the HSH is closed.

At Honeycomb Rocks, the culvert in the parking area was washed out but you can park along the side of the Highway and access Honeycomb Rocks easily. Just be sure you're parked way off the road. :)

Rt 66, Why Not Shop and Coffee Shop at the base of Snowshoe Mountain remain closed. Elk River Inn remains closed at this time as well.

Power has been restored at Watoga State Park, Hillsboro, Cranberry Mountain Nature Center and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and all these locations are back to normal operating schedules.
